Siam Village
Charcoal was the main fuel in transport ( railway, steam engine vessel ) breadmaking industry and metal smelting like tin, iron and copper dating back to the 18th century, and ended in Langkawi in 1987. Before there was coal, the main fuel was charcoal. Thus its use was widespread over the last few decades until natural gas started to replace it as fuel.
Charcoal industry was once conducted by the Thai community at Kilim River and Tg. Rhu, but this activity is no longer permitted by the Kedah Forestry Department thoughout the mangrove forest of Langkawi Island.
The charcoal produced at Kg. Siam then were sent to Southern Thai for sale as a fuel.
